It aims to bridge the gap between practice and theory of finite element method. Steady-state condition is considered. Element properties, convergence requirements and modelling errors are discussed. FEM and solution procedures for linear and nonlinear analyses are presented. The basic linear theory behind the FEM combined with numerical calculations leads to the key variables such as displacements, strains and stresses in various structures and the soil medium. By emphasizing on modelling technique, and by illustration with case studies, the objective is to provide the concepts and techniques of applying FEM to solve practical problems. Limitations and pitfalls of FEM will be elaborated. This course is designed for engineering managers and engineers who would be using the FEM for design analysis, design validation, strength and integrity assessment.

Program Duration

1 Day course

PDUs By PEB

6 PDUs

Speaker’s Info

Dr. Hong Sze Han is the Director and Principal programmer in GeoSoft Pte Ltd. His core competency is in finite element programming. He is responsible for research and development of geotechnical software. He is also an Associate of Tritech Consultants Pte Ltd. responsible for local public tender and provides finite element solutions in geotechnical engineering domain.

Sze Han received his Bachelor Degree from The National University of Singapore (NUS). His interest in geotechnical issues and fascination with computers led him to embark on a postgraduate study of deep excavation using finite element modeling technique. He was conferred PhD in Civil Engineering from NUS in 2004.

He is active in the fields of rock tunnel construction. He had participated in the design of large underground ammunition facilities in rock by DSTA during his employment with SembCorp Engineers and Constructors Pte Ltd. From this megaproject, he gained extensive knowledge and experience in drill and blast excavation in rock.

During the course of his career, he was invited to assist in the forensic investigation of Nicoll Highway Collapse using finite element method. He was also engaged by Saigon Apartment Joint Venture Co. to provide expert advice on the incident of Nguyen Sieu St ground subsidence.

Some local project highlights as a design consultant include Vertical Shaft and Mined Tunnels Advance Work Contract under Centennial Suite, Reflections at Keppel Bay, The Interlace, Sculptura Ardmore and Garden by the Bay. He developed a slope management system for NUS, NParks and PUB involving slope risk ranking and information management. He was invited as speaker for BCA slope seminars.

The major finite element projects completed were Common Services Tunnel, Marina Boulevard Business and Financial Centre, Vertical Shaft and Mined Tunnels Advance Work Contract under Centennial Suite, Sculptura Ardmore in Singapore and Stormwater Management and Road Tunnels in Malaysia.

Course Schedule

Finite element theory for linear materials
Real soil behaviour
Constitutive Models
Non linearity in finite element theory
Benchmarking, restrictions and pitfalls
Analyses of deep Excavation & Tunnel

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″][et_pb_map admin_label=”Map” _builder_version=”3.0.50″ address_lat=”1.3020479″ address_lng=”103.84128069999997″ use_grayscale_filter=”off” grayscale_filter_amount=”0″ mouse_wheel=”on” mobile_dragging=”on” disabled=”off” disabled_on=”off|off|off” address=”11 Cavenagh Rd, Singapore 229616″] [et_pb_map_pin pin_address=”320 Orchard Rd, Singapore 238865″ pin_address_lat=”1.3049283″ pin_address_lng=”103.83313850000002″ /] [/et_pb_map][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”3.0.50″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid”]

Course Date

11 July 2019, Thursday

Venue
Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre

11 Cavenagh Road, Singapore 229616

Fees

Non Members : SGD 400
GeoSS Members : SGD 350
Geosoft Members : SGD 300

All Course fees inclusive of GST.
Please contact course organizer for discount on the course fee condition.

Mode of Payment
Cheque
Crossed and made payable to “Geosoft Pte.
